Five to Seven

HR Blog - Five to Seven

RITUAL: Free Time | SEASON: All | TIME: 5 - 7 pm

In America, it’s common for people to indulge in “happy hour” after work. They’ll often get a drink with friends or colleagues to unwind before going home. Or, they go home to drink alcoholic beverages alone in front of the TV while waiting for their dinner to be ready to eat or delivered to their door.

“It’s five o’clock somewhere.”

The French call this time of day “cinq à sept”, five to seven. In France, the hours between 5 and 7 are spent doing a variety of activities like socializing with friends, having dinner out or meeting a lover for a tryst after work and before going home. If it’s a social event, alcoholic beverages like wine, beer, and cocktails are served with hors d'oeuvres, light refreshments or other finger foods. It can also be a time to host a formal gathering like a salon in private homes or public spaces like an art gallery. Bars and restaurants might offer wine and cheese, beer and nuts or bogo cocktails to promote their establishment.

Americans who don’t need a drink immediately after the work, often use this time of day to run errands or do other daily activities. They might pick up groceries or a take out order on the way home. Some like to go to a gym to workout or take an exercise class before going home. Trad wives and mothers are usually making dinner for their husbands and children this time of day.

If you’re at a stage in your life when you don’t have any pressing responsibilities at this time of day, you might consider creating an early evening ritual for yourself. If you’ve been working all day, either at work or at home, you might need some quiet time to relax or read. If you don’t need alcohol to recover from your day job, you might make yourself a refreshing mocktail with fresh juice and sparkling water or pour some water kefir or kombucha into a wine glass to sip on while you make dinner. If you work from home, you might enjoy getting out of the house for a while by going for a walk outside or taking a drive to watch the sunset.
